Charlie Plumb (Captain)

Speaker Category: Inspirational

Charlie Plumb is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, a former jet fighter pilot and a combat veteran with 74 successful missions over Vietnam.

His 75th mission, however, was perhaps his most successfrul. On May 19, 1967, Charlie Plumb was shot down over enemy territory over Vietnam. He ejected from his F-4 Phantom Jet, parachuted into enemy hands, was taken prisoner, tortured and survived nearly 6 years in a communist prison camp where he distinguished himself among fellow prisoners as a professional in underground communications from an eight by eight foot prison cell. For two of those years he served as the Chaplain in his camp. On February 18, 1973 he was repatriated, underwent medical and security debriefings and returned home to share his story of winning through adversity to audiences in this country and abroad. Mission accompliished!

As a speaker, Charlie Plumb is spellbinding as he draws parallels between his experience and those of every manager, salesperson or parent. He has made personal appearances on such television shows as Good Morning America, Nightline, Larry King and The NewsHour with Jim Leher - moving the viewers with his powerful story. He is frequently called on for his expertise by the U.S. Navy governmental organizations.

Charlie Plumb was born November 3, 1941 in Gary, Indiana. He graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland in 1964 with a Bachelor's Degree in science and a commission in the United States Navy. He went through Navy flight training in Florida, Mississippi and Texas and was awarded Navy wings of gold in November of 1965. In San Diego, California, he was trained to pilot the F4-B Phantom, the Navy's newest supersonic interceptor.

He was instrumental in starting the Navy Fighter Weapons School, now called Top Gun, in Miramar, California.

Captain Plumb's Military honors include two Purple Hearts, the Legion of Merit, the Silver Star, the Bronze and the P.O.W. Medal.

His messages: Life is a choice; Yet another challenge; Firing up morale, exemplify his character, as do his books, "I'm No Hero" and "The Last Domino". Recently retired as a Navy Reserve, he now resides with his wife Cathy and two children in Santa Barbara, California.
